Flex® Robotic System by Medrobotics Corporation

Ergonomics and Usability, Graphical User Interface, Industrial Design, Engineering Development, FEA Analysis

The Medrobotics Flex® Robotic System is a robotic surgery system for minimally invasive procedures. The Flex® system uses highly maneuverable two-handed robotic assisted tools that provide tactile feedback. The surgical robots give physicians access to difficult-to-reach anatomical locations. The system also includes on-board HD visualization for a clear view of the surgical site. Most importantly, it expands access to the option of minimally invasive procedures and reduces post-operative recovery time.

The Flex® system received FDA and European Union clearance as the world's first flexible transabdominal and transthoracic robotic scope.

Medrobotics has been featured in numerous publications and peer-reviewed journals, including Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Challenge

Medrobotics enlisted MANTA to design and engineer a robotic surgical scope that could be both highly flexible and rigid.

Result

Because the Flex® Robotics System was the first of its kind flexible surgical snake robot, MANTA worked closely with leading surgeons to understand the user requirements and use scenarios. We leveraged this information to develop the optimal system architecture, user interface, and individual component elements.

MANTA also designed and engineered the control console, the drive motors and electronics, the single use multi-jointed snake robot, and custom surgical tools for Medrobotics.

In 2016, Medrobotics Flex® received a Medical Design Excellence Gold Award and was featured in Popular Science as "One of Top 100 Annual Best of What’s New Awards: An Innovation That Will Shape The Future."
